What do I know about the faiths of my neighbors?  How has my mind or attitude changed from relationships with those of other faiths?  What do our Scriptures say about other faiths?  Is Christianity the way? Join us in this time of sharing, probing, and learning about our own faith through others’ faiths.  All registrants are encouraged to participate beforehand in one of the many interfaith dinner conversations to be held in the greater Syracuse area on the evening of Tuesday, March 20.  During the months of January and February, look for the dinner conversation registration form at http://interfaithworkscny.org.  (See today’s insert)   Since there will be an early cut-off, please check months before to see when registrations end for dinner conversations.

TRANSFIGURATION

Not infrequently in our spiritual quests, we Christians try to find life in the reading of scripture and meditative prayer, only to discover the practice lacks vitality and that life eludes us.  Numerous observers of this phenomenon have said that a reason for this lack of life and vitality in meditative prayer is that we separate it from action (cf. John 5:39).  But these must  not be separated.

How well we care about our neighbor is as vital to the spiritual quest as what we do when we are turning inward, in our quiet time.  Prayer that does not make a difference in the character or our outward life loses its vigor.  A pious life may flourish for a brief time, but unless it leads to a more caring and responsible relationship with other human beings and to efforts to change conditions that cause human need and suffering, it will most likely not endure.

2012 Dinner Dialogues

InterFaith Works invites you to participate in the 2012 Interfaith Dinner Dialogues on Tuesday, March 20, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Gathering in homes of volunteer hosts who offer a meal and hospitality, participants of many and different faiths engage in groups of eight to ten in relaxed, friendly, and facilitated conversation. People of any faith or spiritual tradition – and also those who do not identify with any particular tradition – are encouraged to participate, as each person in conversation respects the dignity of others and seeks understanding.

Rajinder Bains, Dinner Dialogues Planning Committee Chair, characterizes the program this way: “The Dinner Dialogues are not a way of promoting our faith, or defending our faith, or even about comparing faiths, but an opportunity to deepen respect for others as we learn how each of our faiths has been a source of guidance and inspiration.”

There is no cost to take part in a Dinner Dialogue. Shortly before the event registrants will be contacted by the host with directions to their home. Local area travelling preferences or restrictions, and any special meal needs, will be accommodated.

For more information, or to register by phone, please contact Kim Wolfe at (315) 449-3552, Ext. 106, or by email at kwolfe@interfaithworkscny.org.

Registration deadline closes March 9.   Visit:  www.interfaithworkscny.org
